Program Description

One hundred percent fruit juice plays an important role in helping Americans meet the recommended fruit group daily servings, while also delivering significant nutrients in the diets of children and adults. However, misperceptions frequently exist about 100% fruit juice’s role in health and its contribution to overweight and obesity, especially in children. But what does the research say about these issues? This session will include presentations and discussion from nutrition scientists well-versed in the 100% fruit juice debate. Expect a lively discussion among our panel of scientists as well as the audience to squeeze out the real science behind 100% fruit juice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the latest research on the relationship between and health effects of whole fruit and fruit juice consumption.
  • Describe how economics, education and age influence consumer choices and ultimately nutrient density.

Juice – Beyond Sugar and CaloriesMario Ferruzzi, Purdue University

What does the science say about the relationship between whole fruit and fruit juice?  How does this impact nutrition.  This presentation will review new research looking at nutrient density related to whole fruit and fruit juice.  Also discussed will be presence and availability of other bioactive compounds in juices and the contribution of these liquid products to a healthy diet.

Putting it All Together – A Practical Perspective. Roger Clemens, University of Southern California.

What does the research on juice and fruit mean to the consumer?  This presentation will explore the science looking at the impact of juice on health; examine the controversy surrounding the role of juice and obesity and consumer perception; and finally discuss what we need to know when making Dietary Guideline recommendations and what are the practical issues of fitting juice into a healthy diet.
